Perhaps, I can have some sort of respite from people wanting my services over the weekend. In any case, I have to play the dutiful husband to the most impressive performer witin St Alban's Bach Choir tomorrow evening...

Now, as for my calling. Two agencies wanted to know my going rates for translation (they both received all relevant information of all my professional linguistic skills, together with a CV and reference to this and my other web sites on the Chartered Institute of Linguists' site and on Linked In.) One even sent me a translation document to peruse but I thought it too technical so had to refuse it, which I did earlier this morning. However, she promised to keep my details on file in Glasgow and maybe something else will come of it - such as proofreading the final translation and actually getting some translating work I can do later on. The other in London just wants my details for the moment, but there are indications that something is in the wind to translate English > Welsh. For good measure, I have provided them both with links to the recent legislative moves (Welsh Language Measure) in the National Assembly.

The joint Invoice for the Baptist Minister translation (Welsh > English) went in today. It was joint in that late yesterday afternoon, another ttranslation (English > Welsh) came in to do for 11.30 on a study into boys between 6 and 18 suffering from Haemophilia A. All this was quite technical, and I did a lot of phoning around hospitals to see if they could help with the technical bits. Ultimately, this proved fruitless although useful contacts were made.

Note: Do not phone central NHS Direct number from England if wanting the Welsh service - all nations are apart and consequently you will only get Galw Iechyd Cymru if you are phoning from Wales. Likewise, NHS Direct (England) fields English enquiries. I attempted to be transferred but with little joy. England did phone me back to say that they had tried, and also said there was only 1 Welsh speaker (a treatment nurse) available on the Galw Iechyd Cymru telephone line service. That is she was not available as she was doing her professional job of caring for the sick and fielding questions from potential patients. It seems incredible that she was the onlu one at her post for Galw Iechyd Cymru hotline - the NHS website for Wales is a very extensive and bilingual one. It would be highly surprising if all that resource is being fronted by one harrassed nurse somewhere in the depths o Ysbyty Gwynedd.

Any medical personnel (ideally Welsh speakers) care to provide comments on this and/or to help me out in the future?

By the way, many thanks to the Haemophilia Unit of Ysbyty Gwynedd of fielding my questions and helping as best they could this morning. I know you guys work very hard and professionally - Diolch yn fawr.

And, just as you think you can clock off, there are more rumours of a political party wanting some translation work English > Welsh. No further details as yet - they're being deliberately hush hush, but as political anoraks will tell you, the date of the General Election has yet to be fixed yet either...

Work!

Is this all I do at the moment? A lot of things have happened professionally and socially since my last posting, but I would be here for ages if I were to list them all. And of course all this waffling on about the past probably is irrelevant to the here and now.

Anyway, I'm back - and in more ways than one. I've just had a very successful Expolangues www.expolangues.fr having once more represented the home country in France - this time for the 8th time in all. I did nothing but speak French and Welsh (a little English too) for the last week or so in Paris and was delighted to have 9 students in my annual lesson. Networking seemed to go very well too with the red dragon flag on my back always eliciting a good response and the inevitable questions. In fact, y ddraig goch was even seen on the boulevards and avenues of the French capital and au Metro prompting some to identify me as Bulgarian! Obviously much needs still to be done by the Embassy to educate these people.

Old friends were also met and both Miri and I were wined and dined and generally well conversed with - although she only joined me on the Saturday and we came back on the Sunday.

Lo and behold on my return I saw that I had lost the oportunity to translate a piece into Welsh and proofread another translator's Welsh translation. Yet, all is not lost as another translation quickly followed and next week promises to be even busier. Crossed fingers that some of the Expolangues contacts will come up trumps with other projects - more info. when things become more certain.

Things are definitely warming up politically too at home. A new First Minister, a vote enabling the National Assembly to seek a date for a Referendum on transfering yet more powers from Westminster to Cardiff, and new legislation from the National Assembly itself to provide more rights for Welsh language users and for mental patients. What with a UK General Election due sometime before the beginning of May, we are living in very interesting times.

In the meantime, dear readers (hopefully you are in the plural), I promise to be a bit more faithful to this blog from now on and keep you informed in your chosen language of events both personal and of a national (i.e. Welsh) important.

As well as being Lady Day, today would have been the 59th wedding anniversary of my parents. I was in Cambridge on Saturday, attending the annual day of the Faculty of Education and Language Studies (FELS) for the Open University in the East of England. Dreadful journey and public transport connections: Bus from home to Luton, train from London to Welwyn Garden City, bus from Welwyn to Letchworth Garden City, train from Letchworth to Cambridge. Engineering works on the line apparently. Anyway, the day in Cambridge was well worth attending; networking with fellow lecturers, being feted as the only Welsh representative and attending interesting workshops. I hope to be part of a group of dedicated Researchers at the OU from now on too.

Saturday evening brought news of the narrow Welsh victory in the Six Nations against Italy in Rome: 20-15. But a win is a win, right? More importantly, Miri and I went out and had a meal in our favourite Italian restaurant. Yes, they cook better than they play rugby... atthe moment, anyway...

Sunday. Sainsbury's and curtain buying.

Monday. I have just started an OU on-line course for Tutor Moderators. This should last 3 weeks, and is only part-time. Hope it proves beneficial. Also with the OU, Students' 3rd coursework is due by midnight tonight.

Today 12 March

On 12 March 1881 the Welsh Rugby Union, the WRU, was established in the Castle Hotel, Neath. This blog has many purposes, but together they are to be considered as a means and foundation of raising the profile of both Wales and the Welsh language amongst its readers (and ideally, beyond them). I will of course give a personal reference in the blog from time too. Additionally, according to my own personal predeliction, I intend to blog in any of my three main professional languages: English, French or Welsh.

However, you are free to contact me in your language of choice of the above three and I will reply to you in that one. I do not intend to repeat what is already in my personal profile with regard to my background, either socially or academically nor indeed professionally. With this in mind, I intend to concentrate here on the reasoning behind setting up the blog and what (for the most part) will be its contents. I have regularly found it to be the case that the vast majority of our geographical neighbours (perhaps from choice) have a rather poor understanding and grasp of things regarding to Wales and the Welsh language. The same can be said for a substantial number of our fellow Europeans. If, like me, you are a mother-tongue speaker of Welsh, you may find this a very familiar story. Aware of these deficiencies, and with the potential of interacting with international readers, I thought about establishing this virtual Embassy.

This interaction in the blog reader's language of choice - be it English, French or Welsh - would be, I hoped, a means of providing them with further information about Wales, its vibrant traditions, its strong culture, its long history, its beautiful language and ancient literature, in addition to its contemporary political scene and indeed, anything else of a Welsh interest that a caller at the Embassy could seek. However, let it be stressed immediately that I do not profess to be an expert in ALL fields or disciplines involved in the 'subject matter of Wales.'

For my own part, I will strive to play to my strengths with regard to such matters as Welsh language and literature, some aspects of culture, history and traditions as well as the exciting current affairs situation. It is possible, if not self-evident that I will not be able to supply a full answer every time. Indeed, there will be occasions when answers will not be possible at all as the subject matter is totally beyond my knowledge. In such cases, I intend to refer my readers to more specialist materials and sources, on the Internet or elsewhere, where the answer sought may well be found. In such cases for example, I can categorically state I have limited knowledge of Welsh Folk Dancing, but I do have the address of the person to contact as the Secretary of Cymdeithas Dawns Werin Cymru.

I am not however responsible for any loss or damage suffered by a reader of this blog who relies on the information given by individuals, bodies, organisations or web sites referred to in good faith by me. They are there to be used as possible sources of information and can refer the inquirer to other beneficial sources. If this blog contributes to an increase the knowledg and appreciation of Wales and of things Welsh it will have proven its worth.I look forward to your comments.

Pwrpas y Blog

Croeso i'r blog! Mae i'r blog hwn nifer o bwrpasau, ac fe'u hystyrir yn eu crynswth fel sail i ddatblygu a chodi ymwybyddiaeth o Gymru a'r Gymraeg ymysg ei darllenwyr. Byddaf hefyd yn rhoi ambell i gyfeiriad personol o dro i'w gilydd yn y blog. Bydd y cynnwys yn dilyn fy chwant bersonol o flogio trwy gyfrwng pa bynnag un o'm tri prif iaith brofessiynol: y Gymraeg, Saesneg neu Ffrangeg. Fodd bynnag, os cysylltwch a mi yn eich dewis iaith o'r tair hyn, ceisiaf eich ateb yn ol yn yr iaith honno.

Nid wyf am ail-adrodd beth sydd eisoes yn fy mhroffil bersonol ar gyfer egluro fy nghefndir, boed fel unigolyn neu fel person proffesiynol. O'r herwydd digon am y tro yw ceisio esbonio paham y blog ac am beth (am y rhan fwyaf) fydd ei gynnwys.Digon tila yr wyf wedi darganfod ar y cyfan yw gwybodaeth llawer o'n cymdogion daearyddol (efallai o ddewis) a'n cyd-Ewropeiaid am Gymru a'r Gymraeg. Mae'n debyg os ydych chwithau fel Cymry Cymraeg mam-iaith fel finnau yn ymwybodol o hyn. Gan hynny, gobeithiais greu yma Llysgenhadaeth rhithwir am Gymru a'n hiaith.

Trwy hyn, a thrwy rhyngweithio a'm darllenwyr yn eu dewis hiaith - boed hi'n Gymraeg, Saesneg neu Ffrangeg - y gallaf ddarparu gwybodaeth pellach iddynt am ein gwlad, ei thraddodiadau, ei diwylliant, ei hanes, ei sefyllfa boliticaidd gyfoes a phethau eraill a all fod o ddidordeb iddynt. Yn gyntaf oll, ni honnaf fod yn arbenigwr ar y meysydd hyn i gyd, nac ychwaith ar bob agwedd ar fywyd Cymraeg a Chymreig ein gwlad. Byddaf felly yn cynnig hynny o wybodaeth sydd gennyf yn fy meysydd arbenigol i - yn arbennig yr iaith Gymraeg fodern, llenyddiaeth, hanes a gwleidyddiaeth. Mae'n digon posibl na fyddaf yn gallu sicrhau ateb llawn bob tro, nac ychwaith yn gallu ateb pob cwestiwn. Mewn achosion o'r fath, y cyngor fydd i gyfeirio holwr y cwestiwn at arbenigydd neu gyfeiriad arall lle y gall darganfod y gwybodaeth a fynn.

Gan hynny, fydd yn bosibl i mi ddatgan yn syth nad wyf yn gwybod digon o Ddawnsio Gwerin yng Nghymru, ond yr wyf yn gwybod cyfeiriad Ysgrifennydd Cymdeithas Ddawns Werin Cymru. Fodd bynnag nid wyf yn gyfrifol am unrhyw golled na niwed a ddioddefir oherwydd y wybodaeth a ddarperir gan unigolion, cyrff a safleoedd gwe a gyfeirir atynt yn yr atebion. Defnyddir hwy yn unig fel ffynhonellau a all fod o ddefnydd i'r rhai a fynn rhagor o wybodaeth arbenigol nas gallaf fi ei gynnig yma.

Os gall hyn o flog godi proffil Cymru a'n hunaniaeth yn fyd-eang, roedd yn ymarferiad gwerth ei wneud.

Profile en francais

SIÔN REES WILLIAMS LLB.
